Fast moving storms will present a challenge because their quick motion will cause cross-sections to be spaced farther apart. The figures above show the hail swath (top) and reflectivity (bottom) of a storm moving quickly to the northeast. The red (blue) lines represent where in the hail swath (reflectivity display) the cross-sections should be taken once the storm passes.
Note the larger spacing compared to the slow moving storm. As seen above, in 5 minutes the MESH field has been stretched upstream significantly due to the fast motion.
The reflectivity 10 minutes after the time of the first reflectivity image (the line is the 3rd cross-section line) is shown above to illustrate how quickly the situation will change with fast moving storms.
